Once you decide on the length of time for your charter you can then consider what you want from it. Perhaps visit an offshore island, see some historical sites, arrive at your chosen restaurant by boat, snorkel or spend some time at a remote beach. Be clear at the time of booking so George can accommodate you.
My Sunset Cruise
I had the pleasure of spending 3 hours with George on my private charter carving through waves at speed from Dickenson Bay to Pelican Rock passing some of Antigua's finest beaches such as Turner's, Crabbe Hill and Little Ffryes.
Refreshments include a selection of soft drinks and beer but having heard great things about George's home made rum punch, I choose this, absolutely delicious!
One of the first historical sites we pass is Fort Barrington, a military fort dating back to 1779, built to help protect Antigua's capital, St Johns. George produces two incredibly heavy, rusting cannon balls to handle, the cannons are still visible on the hillside pointing out to sea.
I am intrigued by the imposing rock ahead of us. I am informed its shape is following a major earthquake in the 1970s. The rock split leaving a protruding section shaped like a love heart, hence the name Broken Heart Rock.
As we approach Deep Bay beach we pass over a shipwreck, around 30ft below the surface of the water that has been there for over 100 years. It is a great snorkelling spot with translucent water and an abundance of marine life.
We pass by Hawksbill Rock, named after the similarity in shape to the Hawksbill turtle then sail on to secluded Pinching Bay. I am a frequent traveller to the island but George introduced me to a beach I had never heard of before and I am most grateful for this. I have never walked across sand like it, literally as soft as talcum powder with crystal clear, shallow water. After spending a little time on the beach we set sail again passing a gumbo limbo tree with reddish bark, once used medicinally as an anti-histamine and to make rubber.
En-route to Baker's Cellar Rock, a striking colourful extinct volcanic opening, we cruise past the undulating lush green, landscape of the Sleeping Indian hills.
As the sun begins its descent, a snack of tasty local fruit is prepared. We tuck into guavas and the sweetest dragon fruit I have ever tasted with a picture postcard view of the Five Islands rock formation.
As the engine is switched off and I sip my drink a stingray startles me by leaping out of the sea twice. The sun continues its descent and the sky by this time is even more beautiful with hues of gold and pink. The boat slowly rotates from a breeze created by the Trade Winds, the islands of Montserrat and Guadeloupe visible in the distance. The music is turned up a notch and it's time for a little bit of karaoke before returning to land. Luckily nobody can hear.
